When welding restores integrity:

If the surrounding steel is sound and the failure is limited to the weld or joint, welding brings the connection back to full strength.

When a member must be replaced:

If section loss has thinned the steel below a safe thickness, welding just moves the failure point next door. We cut out the member and fabricate a new one in its place.

When the whole escape needs restoration:

If failure shows up at multiple points across the structure, patch welding stops making sense. We'll say so directly and point you to a full restoration instead, rather than billing repeated spot repairs on a structure that needs rebuilding.

The deciding factor is always section loss and weldability, not what’s fastest to quote.

Signs Your Fire Escape Needs Welding

Not every fire escape problem is a welding problem, but these usually are:

    Before hot work begins, we establish containment and maintain a fire watch throughout the repair process.
  3. Weld or Replace:
    The repair is completed to specification using the appropriate weld procedure for the connection type, or the damaged member is replaced when welding is no longer suitable.
  4. Grind, Prime and Paint:
    After welding is complete, the area is finished with surface preparation and a rust-inhibitive primer before topcoating.
  5. Final Check & Documentation:
    Completed repairs are reviewed, photographed, and documented for your files, board records, or property management requirements.

Timeline depends on scope. A single cracked weld or separated joint is often a same-visit repair. Member replacement or multi-point jobs run longer once fabrication is factored in, and we’ll give you a specific timeframe with your estimate.

Welding & Code Compliance in Westchester

Westchester fire escapes are governed by New York’s Multiple Residence Law and the Property Maintenance Code of New York State, §304.9, enforced locally by each city’s building department and fire marshal. That’s a different framework from what applies inside New York City, and it’s worth knowing before you hire someone who quotes you a citywide code that doesn’t reach your building.
